A Look at Some Valentine’s Day Specials for Some San Gabriel Valley Restaurants by Bill Coburn
Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest days in the year for the restaurant business, so when you read what I’ve written below, you might want to drop everything and make a phone call to one of these restaurants if you want to be included in their festivities. Some places we called, like Restaurant Devon, Café Mundial, Caffe Opera and La Parisienne in Monrovia, and Frank and Dean’s Supper Club in Pasadena, were already completely booked up, and others, such as Frank and Joe’s Southern Smoke House, were getting close, so next year I’ll try and do this column a week earlier.
Many of the restaurants below are offering special items or menus.
Dino’s Italian Inn in Pasadena will offer their regular menu, plus special items such as filet mignon, shrimp scampi and shrimp ravioli. Empanadas Gourmet in Monrovia will feature a special dinner called “Lechon al horno con papas, batatas y cebollas, which, loosely translated, is pork loin, roasted yams, potatoes and onions, as well as fine Malbec wine and crepes with dulce de leche for dessert.
Mediterranean Garden Grill in Monrovia will feature your choice of 5 different appetizers, 3 different kabobs and a glass of wine for $19.99 per person. Soly Azul in Pasadena will feature salsa music to get you in a lover’s mood for the evening.
Mary’s Market and Cafe in Sierra Madre is featuring heart shaped pancakes for couples, so if you’re looking for a romantic breakfast, stop by the historic heart of the canyon. Also in Sierra Madre, Restaurant Lozano is offering a four-course menu at $60/person, featuring a first course of Wild Mushroom and Goat Cheese Strudel or Smoked Salmon with Potato Cakes, Second course of Shrimp Bisque of Spinach and Goat Cheese Cains, entrees of Oven Roasted Prime Rib of Beef, Savory Pork Loin Medallions, Chicken Forestiere, Crab Stuffed Salmon or a Mixed Vegetable Plate, and Chocolate Brioche Bread Pudding, Crème Brulee or Apple Galette for dessert.
Domenico’s Monrovia is offering a Valentine’s Special Sweetheart Menu that includes the choice of an entrée, served with a side of soup or salad, heart shaped pasta, dessert and a glass of champage each. The dinner will be served on a silver platter, and be prepared for two. Choice of entrees include Chicken Marsala; Tri-tip Steak; Links, Peppers and Potatoes; or Chicken Cacciatore. Cost is $34.99 per couple. Bella Sera Trattoria in Monrovia is featuring Filet of Sole Petrezzini, Salmone Calabrese, Double Breast of Chicken, Stuffed Pork Chop, Filet Mignon Rossini and Lamb Chops with mint sauce along with antipasti, soupe and salad, and much more.
Dockside Grill in West Covina is featuring their regular menu as well as several Valentine’s specials, which you can find here. Included are a dinner for two called “The Love Boat” for $49.50, it includes an 8oz cut of roasted Prime Rib, six Slipper Lobsters, deep fried Scallops, and a dish of Scampi Style Shrimp. Each of you get your choice of two side dishes; garlic mashed potatoes, baby potatoes, baked potato, sautéed vegetables, cole slaw, fries or sliced tomatoes. Then to finish it off, you can share one of their desserts selected from the regular dessert menu. They also will have Shrimp Lovers Stuffed Shrimp, Sesame Crusted King Salmon, Champagne Scallops, New York Blue Steak, Steak and Lobster, and Shellfish Kabobs on their special menu.
Matt Denny’s Alehouse in Arcadia will feature its regular menu, plus Petite Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, Seafood Linguini, Mahi Mahi and a “Special Dessert.” Off Citrus in Covina has a complete special menu which you can find here, but a sample of that menu includes appetizers such as Lemon and Garlic Sea Scallops, and Asparagus Prosciutto and Goat Cheese Wrap, among the soups being offered are Lobster Bisque and Clam Chowder, Salads include an Avocado Grapefruit salad and a Seared Scallops with Raspberries and Red Onion Salad, and entrees, which number more than 20, are a Peruvian Shrimp Stir fry, Atlantic Salmon, Braised Lamb with Green Olives and Noodles, and a House Roasted Tri-tip with Peppercorn Sauce.
Tidal Wave Seafood and Oyster Bar in Monrovia is offering a four course meal, with your choice of appetizers from Oysters on the Half Shell, Stuffed Shrimp or Crab Cakes, choice of starters from Mixed Baby Green Salad or Clam Chowder, Tortilla Chicken Soup or Gumbo, Entrees featuring Lobster Pasta, Sea Bass, Lobster Tail and New York Steak, or Wild Alaskan Salmon, and choice of Banana Cream Pie or Tiramisu for dessert. Dinner comes with a rose and a glass of champagne, and costs $65/person.
Frank and Joe’s Southern Smoke House in Monrovia is offering a four course meal, and as we said, their reservations were filling up. Single meals are $40, or it’s $75 per couple. You can download a coupon for $5 off the couple price from the SanGabrielValleyMenus.com website. Dinner will include a choice of appetizers, soup or salad, choice of Pub Filet Steak, Crab Cake, White Sole Filet or Rosemary Chicken, and Dessert.
And for those of you who’s love is out of town, or
if you don’t have someone nearby to share Valentine’s Day with this year, I got
an interesting response from the Sierra Madre Brewing Company2 when I
asked if they were doing a Valentine’s special this year. Co-owner Jim Moran
said we’re not doing anything for couples, but we will be taking extra special
care of the “Valentine Challenged” that stop by that evening. I’m not sure what
that means, but if you’re spending Valentine’s Day alone, you might want to
check out the SMBC2.
