The Peppertree Grill in Sierra
Madre, New Location, Same Great Food
Sorry folks, this
restaurant has since closed.
By Bill Coburn
The Peppertree Grill
in Sierra Madre moved not too long ago from its location on Baldwin Ave. to it’s
new location on Sierra Madre Blvd., at the building that was once the Raven and
the Rose, Sunset Sierra Madre, and most recently, Tailgator’s Sports Bar. The
move included the addition of a full liquor license and a bar, but the menu
stayed pretty close to the same. Owners George and Consuelo Lopez did a really
nice job on the remodel, including opening up the front of the building into a
patio and outside dining area that offers wonderful views of the San Gabriel
mountains just north of Sierra Madre.
Breakfasts, served
until eleven a.m. weekdays, 1p.m. weekends, include 17 combination meals, and
lots of a la carte items. Among the items are standards such as eggs, choice of
meat, potatoes and toast, French toast, oatmeal, and pancakes, and some more
high-brow breakfasts such as Eggs Benedict and a 16oz. T-bone steak and eggs.
And there’s the George’s Special, named after guess who, consisting of a 1/4lb.
burger patty, topped with grilled onions, potatoes, 2 eggs and salsa. I’m
thinking I’ll be trying that soon. There’s also some south of the border items,
like Huevos Ranchero, Chorizo and Eggs, and a Breakfast Burrito. In addition to
all these choices, there’s eight omelets on the menu, and the omelets are
available all day long. I’ve tried the pancakes, the French toast, and the
bacon and eggs breakfasts, and they were all good, and came with plenty of food,
no skimping on the portions. It’s a good place to enjoy a nice breakfast, and
if you can get there on a clear sunny day, the patio and the view really add to
the experience.
Peppertree Grill
also offers nearly two dozen sandwiches, half a dozen different burgers, five
different quiches, a dozen salads and six soups (seven on Friday and Saturday,
when clam chowder is available). I’ve enjoyed the French onion soup, the clam
chowder, and the cream of potato soup.
I haven’t tried very
many of the sandwiches and burgers, because I have a tendency to order the
Chicken Bowl, found on the healthy treats section of the menu. There’s also a
Beef Bowl and a Vegetable Bowl in that section. The chicken bowl consists of
chicken strips with stir fried vegetables served over steamed rice, and for a
small extra charge you can make it all white meat chicken. I’ve had this dish
several times, and they are always kind enough to leave out the squash, bell
peppers and mushrooms on my request. So I get carrots, broccoli, onions, etc.,
and it’s always more than I can eat. It’s also Keelan’s favorite item when we
eat at Peppertree Grill.
There are fourteen
appetizers, several Argentine cuisine items, including NY steak, T-bone, short
ribs and chorizo, several pasta dishes, chicken dishes and the house favorites.
These include chicken or beef Milanesa style or parmigiana style, and Al
Caballo, which the menu describes as breaded steak served with fries and topped
with two eggs. All the house favorites are served with soup or salad.
As if this wasn’t
enough to choose from, there’s also a “South of the Border” section of the
menu. On it, you’ll find your choice of ten wet burritos, tortas, served with
fries, soft or hard shell tacos, nachos, quesadillas, and half a dozen
combination dinners. I know my wife says they have one of the best chile
rellenos she’s ever had, George tells us they make them like he remembers them
from his childhood.
Today, when I
stopped by for lunch, I decided on an international meal. I ordered an empanada
consisting of ground meat and spices in a flaky crust, I believe it was deep
fried (Argentinian), a hard taco with shredded beef (Mexican), French Onion
soup, and a half of a Grilled Philly sandwich (you can choose from beef or
chicken, I opted for chicken). The Cup off Soup and ½ Sandwich came together,
and at just $6.25, it’s a heckuva deal (as always in a review, all prices are
subject to change, reviews frequently last longer than menu pricing does).
Anyway, the empanada
was delicious, and stuffed generously with seasoned ground meat. It’s served
with a pico de gallo salsa, but I requested their spicy salsa, which is quite
good. I don’t know if they still have the garlic salsa I’ve had there in the
past, but if you’re a fan of garlic salsa, you might want to ask about it when
you stop in. I also was surprised at the taco, if there was one thing I’d
complain about, it’s that they had so much shredded beef stuffed into the
tortilla that they really didn’t have room for as much cheese as I usually like
on a taco.
The French onion
soup was delicious, a good mix of onions, broth and cheese, and I think the cup
they served it in is larger than most restaurants’ cups of soup. There were
plenty of onions, and lots of delicious broth, and the cheese didn’t string
itself out as I tried to spoon it up, it actually did a good job of breaking
apart where I put the spoon. I just realized today that the cup of soup is only
$2.50, so I’ll definitely be stopping by again soon for a French onion fix. The
Grilled Philly ½ sandwich was served overflowing out of a delicious fresh French
roll, with lots of chicken, bell peppers, mushrooms, and provolone cheese.
All in all, I had a
really good meal today, and that has always been the case when I’ve eaten at
Peppertree Grill. One thing I haven’t tried yet, though, is dessert at
Peppertree. That’s because I’m usually full, but Peppertree Grill bakes their
own desserts on the premises, and you can select from three types of
cheesecakes, bread pudding, flan, chocolate mousse, deep-fried ice cream, double
crust apple pie, ice cream or a hot fudge sundae.
I don’t want to give
short shrift to the bar, where you’ll find a cd-jukebox, a pool table, and an
upside down golf course (you’ll have to stop by to see what I’m talking about,
I’m out of room for this column). And there’s live entertainment on the
weekends, call for the schedule.
