Eat Like a King at California Chicken King in
Duarte
By Bill Coburn
California Chicken King in Duarte (1112 Huntington Drive, (626) 358-KING (5464)
uses only fresh, all natural chicken and beef with no added chemicals or
hormones. Its rotisserie chicken is marinated with garlic and herbs, and is then
delicately roasted on a skewer to seal in the juices and capture the natural
flavors. Its turkey is 100% breast meat steamed, then glazed on an open wood
flame. Its Tri-Tip Beef is very lean and juicy. It is pink on the inside and
brown on the outside. Its Baby Back Ribs are pressure steamed, then wood flame
roasted for a truly unique flavor.
Okay,
that’s what their marketing material says. I haven’t tried their turkey, or
their Tri-tip, so I’ll take them at their word on those items. But I’ve tried
their rotisserie chicken and their ribs, and I’d have to agree with their
marketing stuff. The chicken was delicious, the ribs meaty and tender. Now I
don’t know if the lack of chemicals or hormones is something I would necessarily
notice a difference about, but I could taste the garlic and herbs, and the
chicken was juicy and hot. I really enjoyed the chicken, seasoned and cooked
quite well (that’s good well, not well done well). The ribs definitely had a
unique flavor, and left me wanting more (I had a couple ribs off Katie’s half
rack). Katie was asked if she wanted them to dunk the ribs in the sauce, or if
she wanted the sauce on the side, and I’m glad she chose the latter, as I was
able to put on the amount of sauce I wanted, instead of somebody else deciding
how much sauce I wanted. The sauce was quite good, by the way, and I’m pretty
picky about BBQ sauce.
I ordered
kernel corn and mashed potatoes and gravy for my sides, Katie had yams and a
green salad. We both had “King Combos” which come with two sides. Keelan had
the roasted chicken sandwich combo, which comes with one side and a drink. For
his side, he had the potato wedges. His chicken sandwich, served as a pita
wrap, was a heck of a good sized sandwich, and with potato wedges and a drink
thrown in for just $5.99, it was a pretty good deal. Sandwiches can be ordered
a la carte for about $2.00 less, on average. My ½ chicken combo (all white) was
just $7.74, and Katie’s ½ rack combo was only $10.99. There are plenty of
places that charge more than that for just the half rack without the side
orders, so we all felt like we got plenty of food for the money, and we all
enjoyed the taste of our food. The one thing that kept this review from a rave,
was that some of the side orders weren’t as hot as I’d have liked them to be.
Into each life, some rain must fall, right? Probably just needed a little more
stirring to get the hot stuff mixed up from the bottom.
California Chicken King also offers take home family meal feasts, such as a
whole chicken with 2 sides and 4 pita breads for just $11.99. They have 2 whole
chickens with 3 sides and 6 pitas for $20.99, and 3 whole chickens with 4 sides
and 12 pitas for only $28.99. Or order some ribs, a whole slab with 3 sides is
just $20.99. They also order a la carte items, a choice of kids meals, and rice
bowls (a roasted chicken or bbq chicken rice bowl is only $3.99)! You can view
the entire California Chicken King menu at www.sangabrielmenus.com/cachickenking.
The
service was good, the food was good, and it was served up surprisingly fast.
They’ll deliver within a 3-mile radius for orders of $15 or more, and they also
do catering and private parties. Debit cards are accepted, with a small
transaction charge. All in all, I’ll be back, and if you happen to be in
Duarte, I’d say you’ll be glad you stopped in, too.
Mea Culpa
Dept. #2 – For the second time in recent weeks, I published erroneous info in
the column. I told you last week about Nikki C’s Restaurant and Bar opening at
470 S. Rosemead Blvd., in Pasadena, but I provided you with the wrong phone
number. I transposed the middle two numbers of the last four. It should have
been listed as (626) 702-7437, not 7347. My apologies. I hate when I do that.
Their menu is now on the SGVMenus.com website.
The
Canadian Café I told you had opened in Monrovia will be celebrating Canada’s 167th
birthday on July 1st by giving each customer a free piece of birthday
cake. No word yet as to whether or not Bob and Doug McKenzie will be able to
make it down, but let’s hope so, ay?
Sierra
Madre Pizza Company has just opened up in the former K’s Deli location at 181 W.
Sierra Madre Blvd., in Sierra Madre. They’ve kept the same phone number K’s
Deli had, (626) 355-6058, and have published nine coupons on the SGVMenus.com
website. Sierra Madre Pizza Company is owned by Ernie de Silva, who brings lots
of experience and a record of success with him to Sierra Madre, with Monrovia
Pizza Co. having already been around for 15 years, Duarte Pizza Co. for 4 years,
Baldwin Park Pizza Co. for 6 years, and East L.A. Pizza Co. for 1 year. Good
luck Ernie, and welcome to Sierra Madre.
