Anthony’s Italian Deli and Posse’s
Sports Bar – Good Food, Good Sports
By Bill Coburn
I wrote a few weeks ago in my column that Arcadia
has a new sports bar, Posse’s Sports Bar on Baldwin Ave., just below Duarte
Road. Close to the track, so you kind of have to figure that’s a good location
for a sports bar. And come Christmas time, I’m probably not going to be the
only husband to leave the mall up the street for a short time and a quick beer
while my wife is doing some shopping.
So tonight, we went there to check it out, figuring
we’d kill two birds with one stone. You see, on the premises with Posse’s is
Anthony’s Italian Deli. In the back there’s also a full service restaurant,
called Possemato’s Italian Gourmet, but I’m thinking I’ll do that review another
time. Anthony’s and Posse’s share a dining room area, and you can order food
from either Posse’s or Anthony’s at the counter at Anthony’s, or from the bar in
Posse’s. Steve Possemato runs all three places.
The menu at Anthony’s is not unusual for an Italian
Deli, but the menu at Posse’s, while offering some typical fare such as a ½ lb.
burger, hot dogs, onion rings, sausage of the month, and buffalo wings, also has
some stuff you’ll be hard pressed to find at any other sports bar, I think. Can
you name another sports bar that has a Blue Cheese Wedge? Or a Bay Shrimp
Salad?
In addition, there are seven flat screen TVs located
around the place, and tonight when we were there in the middle of the AL and NL
pennant races, we were able to watch (from our table) both the Dodgers and the
Giants games. We also could watch the Angels game, and the Red Sox game. For
you non-sports fans, all of these games are critical as the season is winding
down because these teams are all in the hunt for the playoffs. Posse’s also has
the ESPN college football package and the NFL package. On Monday nights, they
offer dollar hot dogs, and drawings are being held with the winners getting such
prizes as a TV or a DVD player. Tuesday to Thursday are drink discount nights,
and they offer half a dozen tap beers in addition to several other bottled
beers. And full cocktail service. But one of the ways you’ll know this is a
true sportsman’s bar is that behind the bar during football season, you can see
who the top 10 teams in the nation are by looking at the hats. They change as
the top ten changes. Kind of a neat idea I thought.
But I digress, we’re here to eat. Katie ordered the
Blue Cheese Wedge and we ordered the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer off the
Posse’s menu. From the Anthony’s menu, Keelan ordered the lasagna, which comes
with garlic bread. I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich, with a meatball on the
side, Katie ordered a sausage on the side, and we got an extra side of garlic
bread. So we got a sampling of both menus.
The mozzarella sticks were excellent. Nice and
crisp on the outside, melted and hot on the inside. The marinara sauce was
delicious, and had big chunks of tomato in it, as well. My roast beef sandwich
was on a nice crispy roll, and the beef was so tender I could hardly believe
it. I asked for a side of au jus on the side for dipping, and that was a nice
addition. The meatball was a good size, and the sauce was seasoned quite well,
not overpowering, but definitely Italian. I tried some of Katie’s sausage, and
was impressed with that as well. One surprising thing was that the meatball and
the sausage were just $1.00 each, an excellent deal.
Katie said the Blue Cheese Wedge was really good,
and suggested a couple restaurants she could think of that would charge $6 or $7
for that item, and wouldn’t give you such a good portion of blue cheese
crumbles. Posse’s charges just $2.50. Keelan’s lasagna, was quite good, too.
I asked him what he thought of it, and he said it was “…mmmm” and a little
“yummm” plus a dash of “hhhhmmmmm”. He’s getting more descriptive. I asked
Katie, after she’d tried a bite of it, if it was any good, and her response was
“Oh my God.” As in good, Oh my God, since I know that could be interpreted
differently. I tried it, and agreed, the pasta was cooked just right, the sauce
was excellent, plenty of cheese. Good stuff.
Anyway, everything we had, we enjoyed. The prices
were extremely reasonable, and I can tell you that everything we tried was
delicious. You can find their menus online at
www.sangabrielvalleymenus.com/anthonysdeli.htm and
www.possessportsbar.com.
And as long as we are on the subject of Italian,
Villa Italia in Duarte (1028 Huntington Dr.), which I wrote up a few weeks ago,
is now having a special Pasta Night on Thursdays, where you can order any of
their delicious pastas with soup or salad AND dessert, for just $12.99.
And it’s that time of year again. Oktoberfests are
coming. The first one I’ve heard about is at Matt Denny’s Alehouse in Arcadia.
Sunday, Oct. 3rd and Sunday, Oct. 24th, from 2 to 9pm, Matt’s will be
offering up German food and beer specials, with a second bar being set up on the
patio to keep up with demand, as I understand it. Both days will also feature
live performances by The Stewedsheizel Oom-pah pah band.
Stop on by and say hi to Steve at Posse’s and
Anthony’s, Matt at Matt Denny’s, and Rosetta at Villa Italia, and be sure to let
them know that you read about them in Dot Com Dining.
