La Grotta di Capri #9

Well
known restaurant writer Paul Wallach has a few things to say about La Grotta
di Capri.
"...
I prefer it to many, far more famous restaurants" "... I recommend La Grotta
di Capri strongly"
"...
This is the kind of place I'd return to again and again"
This
is a hidden gem. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. Pastas are fresh
made daily. There are some excellent chicken and veal dishes and I've been
impressed by several of the seafood oriented items. There's popular live
opera on Fridays and piano with accompaniment on Saturdays.

SolyAzul # 48 -

20 East Colorado Blvd Pasadena 626- 796-0919
If one were to give a dozen competent restaurant
critics the daunting task of identifying the ten best Mexican Restaurants in
the entire country, several restaurants, Topolbampo in Chicago, Maya and
Zarela in New York, would predictably appear on most lists. These
restaurants are widely and justifiably acclaimed for taking Mexican cuisine
far beyond the satisfying, common fare of burritos, tacos and enchiladas.
Each, in their own unique
style, shows the delicious and complex potential
of Mexican cuisine. Quietly, SolyAzul has opened in Old Pasadena and this
restaurant has the ambition and realistic potential of ascending to the
heights 'of these renowned restaurants.
If you peek into the kitchen before sitting
down, you'll see a harbinger of your upcoming culinary experience -a half
dozen chefs busily preparing individual dishes - the same frantic
choreography of high end custom cooking you would find in any top rated
French restaurant
The menu features a dozen entrees and another
ten specials (entrees and appetizers) and of course the traditional
favorites. The eyes flit from one culinary temptation to another - Lobster
Taquitos, Sea Bass Fajitas, Shrimp Cabo, Coyote Chicken and much more. To
experience as much of the wonderful menu as possible, the best approach may
be grazing; ordering liberally from the appetizer and entree list and
sharing. The food is unique and superb, and with the most expensive entree
only $13.95, it's an amazing bargain. Even now, in only its first year,
SolyAzul will change the way you think about Mexican food. There's also a
great happy hour, Monday -Friday 4pm-7pm with $3.50 Margaritas and Mojitos
and great appetizers.

Things I like about The Kitchen:
-
Background music is Frank Sinatra and Dean
Martin.
-
Perfect casual/intimate atmosphere with red
checked tablecloths, soft candle light and lots of natural brick.
-
Great Italian food. There are lots of original
recipes on the menu - try the Lemon Pasta and Baked Ziti.
-
It's not a chain! In fact, there's a good
chance one of the owners, Stacy Finn or Stephanie Jensen will be greeting
you at the door or waiting on your table. How's that for old fashioned?
-
Prices are incredibly reasonable.

Holly Street Bar & Grill #8
175 East Holly Street, Old Pasadena 626 -440-

Now that the Blue Line is finished, it's a good
time to refocus on one of Pasadena's favorite, family owned restaurants -
Holly Street.
It is a beautiful restaurant, luxurious and
relaxed, accented with contemporary art. The charming brick courtyard is one
of Pasadena's finest alfresco dining spots. Plank Roasted Salmon, Roasted
Duck and Southwestern Fettuccine are all superb. There's a good wine list
and very reasonable corkage (1st bottle free, 2nd $5). An added bonus, at
Holly Street you avoid all of the Old Town congestion and parking hassles.
The restaurant is on a quiet block in Old Town's north east corner - an
oasis really. It's easily accessible and there's 90 minutes complimentary
parking right across the street. For those using the Blue Line, the Memorial
Park Station is right beside the restaurant. On Friday and Saturday there's
relaxing live jazz. Sometimes the best new restaurant discoveries are
old favorites.

Avanti Cafe #22

most reasonably priced pasta dishes. In 2001, Avanti was also voted
Pasadena's best Italian restaurant by the Pasadena Weekly and has been

fresh garlic, peppers in a white wine cream

Bermuda onions and cilantro in a tequila lime sauce. Most pasta dishes are
under $10. There's a pleasant, informal southwestern bistro atmosphere and a

all you can eat feast! The Fajitas may be the best I've had anywhere.
Also popular are the Enchiladas La Fiesta Special. At the Pasadena

3768 E Colorado (1 block east of Rosemead),
Pasadena 626-793-1847
Frank Abbadessa is a guy I think a lot of you
are going to enjoy meeting. He's the man who has taken over a favorite
Pasadena landmark - Baby Joe's. Under Frank's direction the old
dowager has been refurbished and renamed.
The restaurant is a tribute to that lost era of
supper club elegance. This is a place the rat pack would feel right at home
in. There are two comfortably elegant dining rooms each lined with spacious
booths and highlighted by a cozy fireplace. Portraits of late great
celebrities adorn the walls. Separating the two dining rooms is a spacious
bar/lounge area where there's entertainment Wednesday - Saturday. For the
entertainment schedule call
the restaurant or go to www.frankanddeans.com.
It's a place to go if dinner and dancing are close to your heart .
The menu features great steaks, seafood and
Italian specialties. The portions are large and so are the drinks. This is
the kind of place that's going to recharge a lot of old memories and create
a lot of new ones.

E's Wine Bar & Restaurant # 3
View E's Wine Bar's Menu
115 East Colorado, Old Pasadena 626-793-6544
First and foremost, this is a serious
restaurant. E's features a talented young chef, David Dial, whose focused
menu concentrates on classic American cuisine - recognizable and superb
dishes. His sauces -simple yet tantalizing - enhance rather than overpower
food. The New York Steak is served with a white wine, green peppercorn cream
sauce; the Filet Mignon comes with a shitake and button mushroom sauce; the
Rack of Lamb with a
delicious red wine reduction and the Ahi Tuna
with a tomato and kalamata olive slaw. Each entree comes with a choice of
two delectable side dishes.
Wine is of course, a major part of the fun at
E's. There's a great selection of wines by the glass. There's also a full
bar with premium sake and sogu
available.
