ARCADIA AND EAST SAN GABRIEL VALLEY RESTAURANTS
Chez Sateau, #11
850 S. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia 626-446-8806
For 20 years, Chef/Owner Ryo Sato's superb
restaurant in Arcadia has been ranked as one of the most celebrated and
elegant restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley. Sato's culinary talents were
developed at some of the world's finest restaurants: Maxim's in Paris, the
Savoy in London and at New York's Plaza Hotel.
This is a good pick for special evenings out -
world class cuisine and elegant atmosphere. Its also a good pick for any
evening out because the prices are so reasonable, you can dine at Chez
Sateau for what you'd pay at an ordinary restaurant. When you consider
the quality of the food and the surroundings, this restaurant offers
remarkable value!

Bella Italia # 45

7232 N Rosemead BI. (just south of Huntington
Dr.) San Gabriel
626-287-5674
This gem of a family owned restaurant may be the
closest you can come to experiencing the charms of New York's Little Italy
here in Southern California. Run by two generations of the Mele family, the
restaurant has been delighting people for over twenty years.
Patriarch Franco presides over the kitchen. His
cuisine is hearty Southern Italian. Classics like manicotti, lasagna, veal
parmigiana and osso bucco arrive in hearty portions and accompanied by
garlic cheese bread and soup (or salad). On most nights there's
entertainment, often Franco himself will pick up the mike inciting his
guests to join him in song. It's a happy, rollicking place that runs very
smoothly thanks to the skills of Sons Pino and Michael who run the front of
the restaurant. This is a place that I hope never changes.

Weiland Fish House #10
10 N. First St., Alhambra
626-943-9901
2004 is bringing a special treat for area
seafood lovers. Restaurateurs Rick Bennett and Dave Vargas are opening an
honest to goodness East Coast style fish house in Alhambra's burgeoning Old
City area. The atmosphere is nautical, casual and fun. You'll find an
extensive selection of fish and shellfish. All entrees come with a choice of
soup, salad and two hearty sides. Look for Weiland's "clambake" - all the
fixings of a traditional New England Clambake -served steaming hot in a
bucket.
You can also look forward to a series of great
seafood festivals throughout the year. The lobster festival is likely to
become a big favorite.
So whenever you get in the mood for great
seafood, roll up your sleeves, grab some friends and head to Weiland's Fish
House.
Note: Opening is scheduled for early January.

Edward's Steak House #31
9600 Flair Drive, El Monte 626 442-2400
Edward's is a glorious family owned institution
with a tradition that dates back over 60 years. It is of course a shrine to
the glory of beef, featuring choice steaks and superb lean ground beef that
arrives at your table perfectly cooked. The restaurant is also celebrated
for its superb fresh fish and an eclectic selection of classic American
style entrees. Entrees arrive with a choice of Edward's Famous Clam Chowder
or soup of the day or salad.
For those with smaller appetite there's a Little
Eater's Menu - a mirror image of the Big Eater's Menu - with smaller
portions and prices. Speaking of prices, they are extremely reasonable given
the quality of the food.
Of course there's great old style atmosphere
with booths, tiffany glass, warm wood furnishings and even sawdust on the
floors. There's a full service bar, a good, reasonably priced wine list with
14 selections by the glass and a good selection of bottles and half bottles.
The service is as warm as the surroundings which is not surprising
considering that many of the staff have been here for ten years or more.
This is a unique restaurant, a great spot to enjoy with friends and an
experience well worth a little road trip.

Tulipano #26
530 S. Citrus Ave., Azusa 626 967-6670
Consider the high praise from Zagat's - the
influential restaurant survey:
"What an amazing find ...A charming oasis"
Tulipano is a hidden gem located in a non
descript mall on Citrus Ave., just south of the 210 Fwy. It's owned by two
brothers, (Eduardo cooks and Vincenzo hosts). The food and service are
superb. So accomplished and confident is the kitchen, that they offer to
prepare whatever you want, if they have the ingredients. The atmosphere is
charming, prices very
reasonable and there's a good wine list. To echo
Zagats, Tulipano is a real find.

Los Gueros # 21
View Los Gueros Menu
313 W. Huntington Dr. Monrovia 626-358-0200
This is a little restaurant with a big heart and
worthy of attention. It has a festive and very authentic Mexican feel to it.
That authentic feel extends to the food. The salsa and tortillas are made
fresh right in the restaurant and on Saturdays and Sundays there's even a
stand where tortillas are made right in front of you. This is one of the few
restaurants where you can order guacamole and have it made right from
scratch right by your table - it's fun and it may well be the best guacamole
you've ever had! All the food is very good and I don't think there's
anything on the menu priced over $10.

SPECIAL NOTES
A few doors down the street from Los Gueros is
Los Gueros Sports Bar. With a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, its a
great spot to get together with friends after work ( there's happy hour
daily from 4pm -7pm with great drink prices) or later in the evening - it's
open till 2am daily. Also if you're on the road to, or from, Las Vegas, stop
at Los Gueros in Barstow. Take the East Main Exit off Hwy 15 to 1231 E. Main
(760-255-1500). It's the same great food and the same great deal for Nite On
The Town members.
Possemato's # 18

1212 South Baldwin Ave, Arcadia 626-446-3171
Here's a very good family owned, neighborhood
restaurant that's deserving of attention even from those living outside of
Arcadia.
The restaurant is cozy and candlelit. Owner
Steve Possemato is the chef and his wife Tammie manages the dining room. The
pasta dishes (20 selections) are excellent. There are classic chicken, veal
and fish dishes and as well, American dishes such as Rack of Lamb and
Steaks. Fresh fish specials are featured each evening. There's a full bar
and a good and reasonably priced wine list.

Villa Italia #39
View Villa Italia's Menu
1028 Huntington Dr., Duarte 626-357-3938
We love discovering restaurants like this, Villa
Italia is a hidden gem in an unlikely location (Target shopping center in
Duarte). The restaurant is warm and cozy, with a warm Mediterranean feel. It
would not be out of place in a small Italian coastal village. Owner Rosetta
Di Piazza will greet you at the door ( on the second visit, chances are
she'll remember you).
The food is excellent. Rosetta has based the
menu on family recipes that have been passed down from her grandmother. The
foundation of any Italian restaurant is the sauce and here the sauces are
wonderful. So are the soups - they're homemade daily. As for specials, they
really are here. The prices are very reasonable and considering the quality
of the food, I think this is a place many of you will want to visit over and
over.

Matt Denny's # 36
View Matt Denny's Menu
145 E Huntington Drive Arcadia 626-462-0250
The best way I can describe Matt Denny's is to
have you think of TV's famous CHEERS and imagine it with great food. It's a
classy, comfortable and convivial place with spacious booths and rich wood
paneling. The menu has three lengthy pages; two dedicated to a classic
selection of pub food - great burgers and sandwiches, over a dozen
appetizers, soups and salads. The third page of the menu offers a truly
upscale dining experience. There's Rack of Lamb with a rosemary demi-glaze,
a fine New York Steak with a bourbon, peppercorn sauce, and a Filet Mignon
topped with mushroom cabernet sauce.
The Salmon Filet comes with a cream Creole
sauce. and the Shrimp Cappelini has five large shrimp served with either a
chardonnay cream sauce or a tomato basil sauce. There are at least a dozen
more tempting entrees and all of them come with a choice of two side dishes.
There's a good wine list, a full bar with over
two dozen beers on tap, and a large patio if you're in the mood for al
fresco dining. All in all, a unique place that manages to be both a
comfortable neighborhood place and a fine restaurant.

The popular Cajun Way Cafe has grown more
ambitious, changed its name and expanded its menu to include the best of
southern comfort foods. Now, in addition to superb Cajun cuisine, you can
enjoy the most popular southern comfort foods; succulent smoked ribs and tri
tip, fried chicken, macaroni & cheese and garlic mashed potatoes. Still the
best spot in the San Gabriel Valley for Cajun, Frank & Joe's Southern Smoke
House is now also the best spot for great southern eating. It's a great
combination.

Dockside Grill #15
View Dockside Grill's menu
3057 E Garvey Ave., West Covina 626-915-3474
This is a paradise for seafood lovers. The menu
features a tempting array of fresh and salt water fish, crab, lobster, fresh
oysters, Manila steamers, paella, Barbados Crab Cakes and much more. This is
the home of the famous Dockside "East Coast Seafood Slam Fest" -literally a
festival clambake of delectably steamed seafood heaped right down on your
butcher paper covered table. Put on your bib, pick up your mallet and you're
in heaven! There's nothing
like a good Slam Fest to liven up an evening. For meat eaters, there's
Prime Rib and New York steaks.
The restaurant has a fun and casual atmosphere -
you feel as if you're in a place on the Maryland shore. There's a good wine
list, generous cocktails and draft beer. Happy hour (daily 2pm -7pm and all
day Sunday) offers great deals on cocktails, beer, appetizers and featured
menu items. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Dockside has become an
entertainment hotspot. The Double Shots, an immensely popular classic rock
group, holds forth with a repertoire that includes olden goldies from the
50's, great groups of the 60's & 70's .
